Vintage Icon

You might be wondering what a vintage icon is. Well, you know that an icon is anything or anyone who is famous and whom people look up to. In fact, icons are so famous that we tend to identify a place or a country with an icon. For example, if you found yourself in front of the Taj Mahal, you would immediately understand that you are in India. The icon helps make things around it famous as well by virtue of its own fame.

When something has enjoyed the stature of an icon for a long period, it attains the status of a vintage icon. Icons enjoy the status of cultural symbols as well. In fact, there are millions of people who look up to icons as something like demigods and worship them! Often, many boys and girls also become emotionally attracted to such icons and idolize them.

In Nigeria, Africa, the Eyo, traditionally called the Adamu Orisa, is the famous white robed masquerade. For everyone in Lagos, the Eyo stands as a symbol of their city. Even foreigners identify the city with the Eyo. Numerous tourists visit Lagos in order to witness the unique procession of Eyo. This example illustrates the fact that an icon is a key factor in making an image of a place.

In fact, such icons often become internalized in the life of the people. The various depictions of icons in art, literature or architecture also remind us of the importance of these icons and the major position that they occupy in the psyche of a society.

The vintage icons also play a major role in preserving the culture of a particular place or nation. It is something that stands to inspire generations. The vintage icon also instills in the new generation a feeling of oneness and helps them remain true to their roots, no matter where they are. We have mentioned the Eyo and it is a very good example of of how a vintage icon helps increase our concern. In Lagos, the words "center for excellence" is inscribed on almost every number plate. We try to ask ourselves and the youngster, can we strive to keep our city as clean as the white robes that Eyo is renowned for?

When it comes to individuals rising to the stature of a classic icon, a ready example is that of Victoria Beckham. She recently beat Kate Moss and Nicole Appleton to attain the position of the ultimate fashion icon in Britain. However, when it comes to individual icons, the question of personal preferences always strikes us. For example, there may be many people who idolize Kate Moss and firmly believe that she deserved that coveted title.

Although great fashion icons like Victoria Beckham are truly the divas who rule the world of fashion, one must agree that one thing that is synchronous with fashion is money. So what Victoria Beckham can afford, others can only dream of! Thus it is not exactly a great idea for someone to try and emulate Mrs. Beckham on the wardrobe front.

Another thing that strikes one most is that however hard you try, you will not be able to catch up with fashion. Even the hottest designer wear that you purchase with much difficulty is something that a celebrity has already worn yesterday. So by the time you can catch up, fashion has moved on and something else is trendy!
